What is the difference between a weld symbol and a welding symbol?
A weld symbol identifies the weld type, such as a fillet or V-groove. A complete welding symbol combines that basic symbol with the reference line, arrow, dimensions, supplementary marks, contour or finish information, and tail notes that communicate the full drawing instruction.
What does the triangle mean on a weld drawing?
The triangle is the fillet weld symbol. Its complete meaning depends on its position relative to the reference line, the governing drawing standard, the size notation, the length or pitch, and any supplementary symbols.
What are arrow-side and other-side weld symbols?
In the common AWS A2.4:2020 convention, a symbol below the reference line specifies the arrow side and a symbol above the line specifies the other side. ISO 2553:2019 supports more than one reference-line system, so an ISO drawing must be read using its identified system rather than assumed to follow the AWS placement rule.
What does the small circle at the arrow and reference line mean?
Where the governing standard uses that mark, the circle indicates a weld all around the specified joint perimeter. It does not automatically mean that every edge, nearby seam, or hidden interface on the part receives a weld.
How do AWS A2.4 and ISO 2553 differ?
a for throat or z for leg length. Confirm the standard and legend before translating a drawing for fabrication.
What does `a6` mean on an ISO weld symbol?
a6 indicates a theoretical throat thickness of 6 mm. The ideal equal-leg geometric equivalent is approximately z8.5, because z = 6 ÷ 0.707. Confirm that the drawing uses a notation and that the design code accepts the intended weld size.
Does a weld symbol specify the welding process?
Not by itself. The symbol identifies the weld type and associated drawing information. The process, filler metal, WPS, inspection method, preheat, interpass limits, and post-weld requirements may appear in the tail, general notes, referenced specifications, or a controlled WPS.
