What hole size should I use for an M4 PEM-style nut?
For PEM S, CLS, and SP metric M4 × 0.7 nuts, the specified mounting hole is 5.41 mm with a +0.08 mm / -0.00 mm tolerance. The final shank code must still match the panel thickness.
What hole size should I use for an M4 self-clinching stud?
For PEM FH, FHS, and FHA M4 × 0.7 flush-head studs, the specified mounting hole is 4.00 mm with a +0.08 mm / -0.00 mm tolerance.
Can I use the same hole size for an M4 nut and M4 stud?
No. An M4 PEM S/CLS/SP nut uses a 5.41 mm hole, while an M4 PEM FH/FHS/FHA flush-head stud uses a 4.00 mm hole. The hole size follows the fastener series and clinching geometry, not the thread designation alone.
Can self-clinching hardware be installed in stainless steel?
Yes, but only when the selected hardware is designed for the panel’s stainless grade, hardness, thickness, and corrosion requirements. PEM’s SP nuts are intended for compatible stainless-sheet applications, while FH4 and FHP studs are options designed for stainless panels.
Should hardware be installed before powder coating?
Usually, yes. Installing before powder coating helps prevent coating damage from the press operation and supports proper seating. If thread masking, electrical bonding, post-finish installation, or special corrosion control is required, specify the sequence on the drawing.
Can laser-cut holes be used for PEM hardware?
Yes, when the finished hole meets the specified diameter, tolerance, roundness, edge condition, and material requirements. For production quantities, punching may offer more consistent hole geometry and cycle time. In either case, avoid a heavy burr, countersink, or chamfer on the clinching side.
