Using this chart’s densities, 1.0 mm sheet weighs 7.85 kg/m² for carbon/structural steel, 7.90 kg/m² for 304 stainless steel, and 2.70 kg/m² for the representative aluminum basis. These are nominal calculated values before coatings or added components.
How much does a 4 × 8 ft sheet of metal weigh?
An exact 4 × 8 ft sheet has an area of 32 ft², or approximately 2.9729 m². Multiply that area by the chart value for the material and thickness. At 1.0 mm, the estimates are 23.34 kg for steel, 23.49 kg for 304 stainless, and 8.03 kg for the aluminum basis used here.
What is the formula for steel sheet weight?
In metric units, multiply length in meters by width in meters, thickness in millimeters, and density in kg/m³, then divide by 1,000. For the steel basis in this chart, use 7,850 kg/m³ unless the specified grade requires a different value.
Is stainless steel heavier than carbon steel?

Does bending change sheet metal weight?
Bending alone does not materially change the metal mass. However, a formed part’s flat pattern includes bend allowance, so estimating from only the finished outside length and width can be wrong. Use the developed flat geometry and then add or subtract any secondary materials or removed features.
Should coating be included in sheet metal weight?
Include coating when estimating finished-part, shipping, or verified assembly mass. Do not assume that the overall coated thickness multiplied by the base-metal density gives the correct answer. Use the coating specification’s mass per area or supplier data, especially for metallic coatings.
Can this sheet metal weight chart be used for lifting calculations?
No. Use it for preliminary estimating only. Lifting plans require verified actual mass, center of gravity, approved lifting points and equipment, and the applicable workplace or project safety requirements.
