class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To understand what we see on our CAM software when we look at your CAD file, you must know the terminology. A sheet metal bend consists of three primary physical elements. Here are the basic components of a <a href=\"\/sheet-metal-bending-services\/\">sheet metal bend<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Base:<\/strong> The flat, stationary part of your design.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Flange:<\/strong> The edge that gets bent upward or downward.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Apex:<\/strong> The center of the bend. Think of it as the hinge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-why-do-short-flanges-fail-in-a-v-die\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Do_Short_Flanges_Fail_in_a_V-Die\"><\/span>Why Do Short Flanges Fail in a V-Die?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We bend sheet metal using a machine called a press brake. A top punch pushes the flat metal down into a V-shaped bottom tool called a die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this to work, your metal needs to rest securely across both shoulders of that &#8220;V.&#8221; If your flange is too short, it won&#8217;t reach across the opening. When a flange slips into the V-die, it causes these three major manufacturing failures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your bend angles will be incorrect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The metal edges will warp or crack.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The slipping metal strikes and chips expensive steel tooling (we once lost a $2,000 precision V-die to this mistake).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If this happens, can an operator save the part? No. If a flange slips, it ruins the whole batch. A human operator cannot muscle a bad design into place against tons of machine pressure. If the length is wrong, you will pump out expensive scrap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-what-is-the-difference-between-a-supportable-and-formable-flange\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Is_the_Difference_Between_a_Supportable_and_Formable_Flange\"><\/span>What Is the Difference Between a Supportable and Formable Flange?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a distinct difference between a marginal flange and one that works well. A merely supportable flange spans the V-die, while a truly formable flange sits flat, absorbs the pressure evenly, and bends consistently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might be tempted to design at the minimum limit to save space. Do not do this. You are taking a massive tolerance risk. At the bare minimum limit, the metal shifts slightly during bending. One part might bend at 90 degrees, while the next bends at 86 degrees. You lose bending consistency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ShincoFab Floor Fact:<\/strong> Cheating the rules is expensive. When customers send us designs with a flange 1mm under the minimum required length, we historically see scrap rates spike to 35%. The rule here is straightforward. Measure from the center of the bend line to the nearest cut edge. The bend line is where the press brake punch strikes the metal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Always remember that metal stretches when you bend it. Your 2D flat pattern must account for this stretching. If you do not calculate the stretch properly, your final formed flange will be too short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-how-do-you-measure-a-flange-on-a-3d-cad-model\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Do_You_Measure_a_Flange_on_a_3D_CAD_Model\"><\/span>How Do You Measure a Flange on a 3D CAD Model?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you use 3D software like SolidWorks or Fusion 360? If so, your starting point changes. On a formed 3D model, you measure from the apex of the bend to the outer cut edge. The apex is the center of that outside corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To make sure your measurements are accurate, you must tell your software that you are making a sheet metal part. Always apply standard &#8220;sheet metal rules&#8221; in your program settings. This locks in your material thickness and allows the computer to handle the complicated stretch calculations for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-how-does-a-short-flange-impact-manufacturing-costs\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Does_a_Short_Flange_Impact_Manufacturing_Costs\"><\/span>How Does a Short Flange Impact Manufacturing Costs?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is easy to think of a short flange as a minor design quirk. It is not. It is a severe financial drain. When you ignore minimum flange limits, you pay for it in three hidden ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, you pay for the scrap. As I mentioned earlier, short flanges slip and warp. Every time a bend fails, that piece of metal goes straight into the recycle bin. But you still paid for that raw material. You also paid for the machine time it took to cut that ruined part in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second, you risk destroying expensive equipment. When a short flange slips into the V-die, the press brake punch slams the metal against the steel shoulder of the die. This cracks or chips the tooling.
